NORTHPORT (NEWS CENTER) - When Laura Tasheiko was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of 2007, she knew the fight would be tough. She didn't know it would nearly take her livelihood.
Tasheiko has been a painter her whole life. And she said it's how she expresses her thoughts and emotions. So after shew as diagnosed, she decided to create a blog about her journey. In it, she shows pictures of the people who helped her along the way, and she uploaded self-portraits to express herself.
She got a lot of comfort from the people she met online, as well as through a support group in Bangor. But the chemotherapy drug she was taking soon robbed her of something she considered a major part of her identity: her ability to paint.
Taxol, the drug, has a side effect that can make a patient not have feeling in his or her hands and feet. That's what happened to Tasheiko, and she couldn't hold a paint brush for a year.
She went to physical therapy, tried different medications to stop the side effects, and kept writing the blog. She tried to keep painting by pouring the paint on the canvas and then manipulating the whole canvas with her hands to spread it around.
A few months after her treatment was completed, she got the feeling back in her hands. To celebrate, and to get motivated to get back into work, Tasheiko challenged herself to create 100 paintings in 100 days. She uploaded photos of each painting online, and so far she has sold 40 of them.
